THE PLAN
This 1954 house still had a lot of its original character, down to the green carpet. The family room was wood-paneled with a fireplace, and fruit trees filled the backyard. The layout just wasn't built for how people live now.
The plan moves the kitchen and opens the main living space to the yard. The backyard becomes the part of the house people use most.

The inside is framed and roughed in. The kitchen has moved and its 7-foot island is framed. The open plan now runs toward the new bifold opening, and the walk-in shower in the primary bath is taking shape.
Out back, the plan is set for a pergola and a custom BBQ with a real lawn around them. The landscaping walkthrough happened the same day.
Here's the house in its original condition. The kitchen was wood with a pass-through, and the paneled family room had a fireplace and beams. Out back, fruit trees lined the lawn.
The plan from here is a new spot for the kitchen and one open living space that leads out to the yard.
Sal walks every house with his contractor before he makes an offer. The scope and the bid are settled first, so the offer can be as strong as the numbers allow.
Here they talked through pushing the kitchen back to fit an island. Sal also wanted to keep as much of the backyard as he could, because a yard this size is rare.
Out back they found banana and apple trees, and the house got its nickname, the fruit house.
